American Music Therapy Association (AMTA):
Music therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed music therapy program.
Music therapy is an allied health profession established and recognized on a Federal level in the United States of America. The Certification Board for Music Therapist (CBMT) oversees the credentials for professional practicing of music therapy in the USA.
Since 2005, CBMT and AMTA collaborate on State Recognition Operational Plan in order to assure delivery of the services to people who may benefit from music therapy.
- 21 states currently have state Associations locally supporting music therapy
- 8 states recognized music therapy as a related health service with appropriate accommodating funding
- 2 states established licensure to practice music therapy.
